Champions Tour – The Tucson Conquistadores Classic

Tucson-Conquistadores-Classic-Logo This month brought a lot of great playing and teaching opportunities! I played in my first PGA TOUR Champions event this year at the Tucson Conquistadores Classic. The tournament was held at the Omni Tucson National’s Catalina Course. I enjoyed putting my game to the test, and was extremely happy with my new PING G driver.

Using the Orange Whip Putting Wand

I am always looking for ways to connect with my students. Although I have not used many different teaching aids in the past, I am currently enjoying success with some of the new products this season. Particularly, I use the Orange Whip Putting Wand almost every lesson.
Orange-Whip-PutterThe Orange Whip Putter Wand has a flexible shaft and heavy counter balance weight on the grip end, which helps my students feel better rhythm and proper release in their stroke. This especially helps with lag putting. The flexible shaft allows the student to feel if the stroke is being accelerated at the wrong time or on the wrong end. Once they feel the putter head swing in sequence, their touch and feel quickly improves.

Most of you know I teach students of all ages and skill levels. This month I especially enjoyed teaching two ladies: Janice from Grayhawk and Ha Na Jang from the LPGA Tour. Ha Na is on a roll this season and I have to admit teaching someone with her talent and success carries much responsibility.

Fortunately Ha Na was looking to work on her chipping and I was able to add a new shot to her game. She mostly has played shots around the green with lots of back spin. I was able to show her how to square up her stance and play a low chip and run. She was excited to have a new option around the green.

As for Janice, she needed her putting to become much more consistent. We worked on her pre-shot routine which helps her align more consistently, and we also worked on the rhythm and sequence of her stroke. With the use of the Orange Whip putter, she started to roll her longer putts up closer to the hole. Janice came to me later in the week very excited to show me her score card. She had shot 79, her lowest 18-hole score ever.

Tip of the Month

Simple teaching aids can often help with alignment and aide in finding the smooth stroke that works best for your personally. Great aim and proper stroke sequence will always help with lowering your scores.

On Golf Channel

I had a tremendous opportunity to shoot some instruction footage with The Golf Channel’s Dave Marr III for a segment that will appear on The Golf Channel’s PGA TOUR Champions Learning Center at the end of this month. You can learn more about the segment and see a video clip from the show by jumping over to Stan Utley On the Golf Channel post on my website.
